One of my editorial assistants, Amelia.

About me:

Hi, I’m Cara!

I am a freelance developmental fiction editor and author coach.

I’m a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and work hard to uphold their high standards of professionalism.

My work in editing and author advocation began in 2011 when I started editing the work of friends. Delighted at how I could encourage authors and help their work shine, I continued on to edit stories for the Central Illinois community at large, and years later, began working professionally for authors and creators around the globe.

Read the Stars was born in 2021, my way of transforming a lifelong passion and education into a career that can serve and uplift authors.

I graduated from Illinois Central College on the President’s List for exceptional GPA, where I majored in English. I was a member of Sigma Kappa Delta, a collegiate honor society for English majors.

In addition to editing, I am also the co-founding director and vice president of My Writing Shed, a nonprofit foundation which aims to support, teach, and give a creative space to writers in Central Illinois.

You can read or listen to our interview with WCBU regarding our mission serving Central IL writers through My Writing Shed. WBCU later interviewed us again for their Out and About program.

My Writing Shed was also featured in Peoria Magazine.

My Strengths:

  • Fiction editing of any length, from flash fiction to voluminous novels.

  • LGBTQ+ friendly! 🏳️‍🌈

  • Experience in editing multiple genres, including lit fic, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, horror, and more.

  • Having an eye for symbolism and how to play subtle, evocative descriptions or word choices to your strength.

  • I love authors! I respect, admire, and advocate for creators of all kinds. Writing a short story or novel is a feat to be celebrated, so I'll handle your work with the dignity both it and you deserve.

  • I work quickly and efficiently. I have experience working with demanding turn-around times and tight deadlines from small publishers and indie authors alike.

Some Fun Facts About Me:

  • I love cats (can you tell?) and own two beautiful little ones who keep me company at work. Chances are, if I’m working on your manuscript at home, Ann and Amelia are curled up on my lap.

  • I’m also a writer! I write romance, fantasy, sci-fi and horror. Right now, I’m working on a sci-fi romance trilogy.

  • I may also be just a little bit obsessed with stationery, including fountain pens and inks.

  • I’m a houseplant hoarder and my home resembles an indoor forest.

  • I collect and fix up vintage typewriters and enjoy writing with them. My oldest typewriter is a 1938 Remington Deluxe Noiseless.

  • I love astronomy and anything related to space.

  • I sincerely enjoy teaching others. If you’re an aspiring freelance editor and need help, please feel free to reach out to me. The same goes for writers. If you have any burning questions or are just curious about anything, I’m more than happy to chat with you!
